The hardness of PCBN is second only to that of diamond. Its hardness is usually between 30 and 50Pa, which enables it to maintain good cutting performance when processing high-hardness materials. For example, when processing materials such as hardened steel and cemented carbide, PCBN cutting tools can effectively cut into the materials while having relatively little wear on themselves.
Due to its high hardness, PCBN cutting tools can maintain the sharpness of the cutting edge during high-speed cutting and high-precision machining processes, the ensuring the quality and precision of the machined surface.
PCBN has excellent thermal stability. It can maintain good physical and chemical properties in high-temperature environments. Generally speaking, PCBN can still work stably under the high temperature ranging from 1000℃ to 1200℃.
During the cutting process, a large amount of cutting heat is generated. However, PCBN cutting tools will not experience phenomena such as softening and oxidation due to high temperature, so they can continue to cut effectively. For example, in dry cutting operations, the high thermal stability advantage of PCBN cutting tools is even more pronounced, because they can withstand the high heat generated in the cutting area, unlike some ordinary cutting tools that may fail due to high temperatures.
PCBN is chemically inert towards most metals at high temperatures. It is not prone to chemical reactions with iron group elements, which enables it to avoid tool wear and corrosion caused by chemical reactions when processing metal materials such as steel.
For example, when cutting alloy steel containing multiple alloying elements, PCBN cutting tools can resist the chemical erosion of alloying elements, ensuring the service life of the tools and the processing quality.
Due to the high hardness and chemical stability of PCBN, its wear resistance is extremely excellent. Under the same cutting conditions, the wear amount of PCBN cutting tools is much smaller than that of ordinary cemented carbide cutting tools.
For instance, during the continuous cutting process, PCBN cutting tools can maintain dimensional accuracy and cutting performance for a long time, reduce the frequency of tool replacement and improve processing efficiency.
PCBN materials have a relatively high thermal conductivity and can quickly conduct the heat generated during the cutting process outwards. This helps to reduce the temperature in the cutting area and minimize the thermal damage to the cutting tools and the thermal deformation of workpieces.
For example, in precision machining, the thermal deformation of workpieces is an important factor affecting the machining precision. PCBN cutting tools can effectively control the temperature of workpieces through their good thermal conductivity, thus improving the machining precision.
