What is Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN) ?

Cubic Boron Nitride (abbreviated CBN) is a synthetic superhard material.

CBN has the following characteristics:

① High hardness:

Its microhardness reaches HV72,000 – 98,000 MPa, and its Mohs hardness is 9.7. Its hardness is second only to that of diamond and it is the second hardest material in nature. Therefore, it has excellent wear resistance and can maintain good sharpness of the cutting edge and grinding performance of grinding tools when processing high-hardness materials.

② High thermal stability:

It can withstand cutting temperatures above 1200 °C, and its thermal stability is better than that of synthetic diamond. This enables cubic boron nitride to maintain stable performance in high-temperature processing environments, and it is not prone to problems such as deformation and oxidation, thus ensuring processing accuracy and efficiency.

③ High chemical stability:

It has a high degree of chemical inertness towards iron group metals and their alloys, and also has relatively high chemical stability towards acids and alkalis in neutral and reducing gas media. This characteristic makes it less likely to have chemical reactions with the materials being processed during the processing, prolonging the service life of cutting tools and grinding tools, and at the same time ensuring the quality of the processed parts.

④ Good thermal conductivity:

The thermal conductivity coefficient of cubic boron nitride is 79.54 W/m·K. Although it is lower than that of diamond, it is much higher than that of high-speed steel, cemented carbide and other ceramic materials. Good thermal conductivity helps to quickly dissipate heat during the processing, reducing the thermal deformation of cutting tools and workpieces, and improving processing accuracy and surface quality.

⑤ Insulation property:

Cubic boron nitride is an insulator, but it is an excellent heat conductor. This characteristic gives it unique advantages in some specific electronic and electrical application fields. For example, it can be used to make certain electronic components that require both insulation and heat conduction.
