PCD tools are widely used in the machining of automotive parts. For example, they are used to machine pistons, cylinder blocks of engines, gears of gearboxes and so on. –Synthesis of polycrystalline diamond composite sheets
The high temperature and high pressure (HPHT) synthesis method is usually adopted. Under the environment of high temperature (about 1400 – 1800 °C) and high pressure (about 5 – 10 GPa), diamond micropowder is mixed with metal catalysts (such as cobalt, nickel, etc.) and sintered into polycrystalline diamond composite sheets in a mold. This process requires precise control of parameters such as temperature, pressure and time to ensure the quality of the composite sheets.
–Tool processing
It includes steps like cutting, grinding and welding. Cutting is to cut the polycrystalline diamond composite sheets according to the designed dimensions of the tools; grinding is aimed at obtaining the precise shape and accuracy of the cutting edge of the tools; welding is to firmly weld the cut composite sheets onto the cemented carbide substrates. This step requires the use of special welding materials and techniques to ensure the welding quality.
