PCD Tools are polycrystalline diamond tools.
–Main components
The cutting edge part of PCD tools is mainly composed of polycrystalline diamond. It is formed by synthetic methods, where numerous tiny diamond particles are sintered together under high temperature and high pressure conditions to create a polycrystalline diamond composite sheet with a certain shape and size. These diamond particles are closely bonded to each other, endowing the tools with extremely high hardness and wear resistance.
–Tool structure
Generally, polycrystalline diamond (PCD) tools have the polycrystalline diamond composite sheets welded onto the cemented carbide substrates. The cemented carbide substrates provide good rigidity and strength and are capable of withstanding the cutting forces during the cutting process, while the polycrystalline diamond layer is used for cutting workpieces. Such a structural design combines the advantages of both, enabling the tools to cut effectively and possess sufficient mechanical properties to ensure the service life and stability of the tools.
–High hardness and wear resistance
Diamond is the hardest substance in nature, and the hardness of PCD tools is second only to that of natural diamond. During the cutting process, it can maintain the sharpness of the cutting edge. For machining high-hardness materials, such as cemented carbide, ceramics, glass fiber reinforced plastics, etc., it can effectively reduce tool wear and extend the service life of the tools. For example, when machining the aluminum alloy cylinder blocks of automobile engines, the service life of PCD tools can be several times longer than that of ordinary cemented carbide tools.
-High thermal conductivity
The thermal conductivity coefficient of PCD tools is much higher than that of cemented carbide tools. During the cutting process, the heat generated can be quickly transferred away from the cutting edge, reducing the temperature of the cutting edge and minimizing the situations of tool wear and decline in the surface quality of workpieces caused by high temperature. This enables PCD tools to still maintain good cutting performance during high-speed cutting.
-Low friction coefficient
The friction coefficient between PCD tools and workpiece materials is relatively low. During the cutting process, it can reduce the cutting force and lower the roughness of the machined surface. For precision machining, such as the grinding of optical lenses, high-quality machined surfaces can be obtained.
