Nano diamond refers to diamond particles with a grain size within 100 mm. In domestic and foreign literature, this kind of diamond is also known as “ultra fine diamond” (abbreviated as UFD), which can be translated as “ultra-fine diamond”. It is also called “ultra dispersed diamond” (abbreviated as UDD), which means “ultra-dispersed diamond”, and is also referred to as nano-crystalline diamond.
There are mainly four elements, namely C (carbon), H (hydrogen), O (oxygen), and N (nitrogen) in the nanoprocessing powder. Besides, it also contains other impurities such as Al (aluminum), Si (silicon), Ca (calcium), Fe (iron), etc.
The grain size of nano diamond ranges from 0.5 to 20 nm, with an average size of about 4 to 8 nm, and most of the particle sizes are between 2 and 8 nm.
The main uses of nanodiamonds are as follows:
1. Additive material for lubricants. It can be used as an additive material for lubricants. Adding nano diamond to lubricating oil can improve its anti-wear performance, reduce frictional resistance, and prolong the service life of the friction pairs in oxygen chambers.
2. Additive for composite coatings. Nano diamond are added to composite electroplating solutions such as nickel plating, chromium plating, copper plating, and zinc plating. Through electroplating or electroless plating, a coating containing nano diamond is formed on the surfaces of various cutting tools, molds, gears, shafts, cylinders, cylinder liners, nozzles, etc., which can significantly improve their wear resistance and hardness. Meanwhile, it can also enhance their self-lubricating properties.
3. Raw material for production. Using nano diamond as raw materials, large-grained diamonds or diamond sintered bodies can be prepared under high temperature and high pressure conditions. When nano diamond are added to rubber and polymers, their properties can be greatly improved.
The preparation of ceramic matrix composites with nano diamond powder additives can greatly enhance their toughness, reduce brittleness, and endow them with higher wear resistance.
4. As an absorbent. Nano diamonds have a high transmittance and absorption rate for radar waves, infrared and ultraviolet light waves. When coated on the outer surfaces of aircraft, missiles, tanks, armored vehicles, cannons, warships, etc., they can play roles such as stealth, wear resistance, and anti-corrosion.
Nanodiamonds have an extremely large specific surface area and an extremely strong ability to absorb oxygen and store hydrogen. They can be used as the matrix of fuel cells and have great applications in the development of new energy sources and pollution reduction.
5. Applications in the electronics industry. Nano diamond semiconductor materials can be fabricated by the detonation method, which can significantly increase the operating speed of circuits. It is an ideal material for manufacturing highly reliable and radiation-resistant semiconductor devices.
6. Biomedical materials. When nano diamonds are coated on the surfaces of teeth, mandibles, leg joints, etc., they have good biocompatibility and excellent wear resistance, and are widely used in the field of biomedicine.
