    ⅠHistory of plating:

    As early as 90 years ago, people already knew about applying metal to coat diamond particles.

    However, it was not until 1965 that when Nicodur proposed the basis that plating the surface of diamond abrasive grains with metal could increase the service life of grinding wheels by more than 50% according to the grinding mechanism, people became interested in it again.

    For the plating method of metal, wet plating (electroless plating and electroplating after electroless plating) is generally used. In addition, various dry plating methods such as vacuum evaporation plating, sputtering plating, and plasma vapor deposition have also been successively applied to the surface plating of superhard materials.

    Ⅱ Functions of the coating on the surface of superhard abrasives:

    Generally speaking, the purpose of plating on the surface of various manufactured parts in industry is to improve the following aspects of performance:

    ① rust prevention;

    ② decoration;

    ③ surface hardness and wear resistance;

    ④ electrical conductivity;

    ⑤ magnetic conductivity;

    ⑥ others, such as reflective performance and local anti-carburization.

    Compared with general plating, the surface plating of abrasive particles has both commonalities and particularities. Its main purpose is to improve the grinding performance of abrasives and enhance the grinding effect, which is specifically manifested in the following aspects.

    ①It can improve the bonding strength between abrasives and binders and prolong the service life of grinding wheels. According to foreign survey results, the effective utilization rate of diamond abrasive grains in resin grinding wheels is very low. 60% to 70% of the abrasive grains fall off prematurely when they have not fully exerted their functions. The reason is that the resin and Huangguoshu are not firmly bonded. When a layer of metal is plated on the surface of the abrasive grain, on the one hand, the metal tightly wraps the diamond, and on the other hand, the metal can be well bonded to the resin binder. Through this bridging role of the coating, the bonding strength between diamond and resin is greatly improved.

    ②It can improve the particle strength of abrasive grains (mainly referring to low-strength abrasive grains used for resin binders). Taking cubic boron nitride as an example, when the weight is increased by 50%, the compressive strength can be increased by 50% to 60%. For the strengthening effect on abrasive grains, the Cu layer is more significant than the Ni layer.

    ③Endow abrasive grains with special physical properties. Such as magnetic permeability, electrical conductivity, and thermal conductivity. Generally speaking, the thermal conductivity of a metal coating is smaller than that of diamond and larger than that of a resin binder.
