1. Hydrophobicity
Diamond is not wetted by water but is easily adhered to oil. This hydrophobic and lipophilic characteristic is determined by the nature of the nonpolar bonds in diamond hybridization. This characteristic not only suggests that people can use oil to extract diamond, but also when manufacturing diamond abrasives, organic substances containing lipophilic groups should be selected as diamond wetting agents.
2. Chemical stability at normal temperature
At normal temperature, diamond shows inertness to all chemical reagents such as acids, alkalis, and salts. Under heating conditions (below 1000°C), except for individual oxidants, it is not corroded by other chemical reagents. Utilizing the stability of diamond, acids and alkalis can be used to purify diamond.
3. Oxidation at high temperature
At several hundred degrees Celsius, certain oxidants, such as perchlorates, can react with diamond. In pure oxygen, above 600°C, diamond begins to lose its luster and a black skin appears, which is called incineration. It begins to burn at 700 – 780°C. In air, the oxidation temperature of synthetic diamond begins at 740 – 840°C, and some products can be oxidized at around 600°C. Thermal stability depends on the integrity of the diamond crystal.
4. Graphitization phenomenon of diamond
In vacuum or inert gas, when heated to a certain high temperature, diamond will undergo graphitization. When there is even a very small amount of oxygen, graphitization begins at a lower temperature (below 1000°C). The graphitization that occurs below 1400°C is actually the effect of oxygen.
