This section introduces the concept, classification, characteristics and application fields of artificial polycrystalline diamond.
Polycrystalline diamond, abbreviated as PCD, generally refers to a kind of superhard material product formed by the aggregation of many fine grains (0.1 – 100 μm) of diamond polycrystals. Except for the disadvantage of opacity, high-quality polycrystalline diamond can be comparable to large-grain single crystal diamond in other properties, and some properties are even better than large single crystals.
The polycrystal is composed of numerous fine grains. As a whole, there is no characteristic cleavage plane inherent in single crystal diamond. Therefore, during use, it is micro-edge fragmentation, and there will be no brittle fracture and chipping phenomenon under impact load, which causes non-cutting wear and damage. In this way, the service life can be significantly extended.
The polycrystal shows its strong vitality due to the following characteristics:
1). The grains are arranged in disorder, there is no cleavage plane, the hardness is uniform, and there is no directionality.
2). It has high hardness, high wear resistance and relatively high strength, especially impact resistance.
3). It can be directly synthesized or processed into a specific shape.
4). The performance of the product can be designed or predicted, and necessary characteristics can be given to the product to adapt to its specific use.
