How to correctly select the coating types and methods for abrasives such as diamond and cubic boron nitride (CBN) according to the requirements of superhard material grinding tools is the key to determining whether the expected effects of the abrasives can be achieved.
①. Industrial diamonds and CBN with fine particles are usually bonded together with metal, ceramic or resin as binders to form various types of superhard tools. Therefore, the service life and utilization efficiency of diamond and CBN tools not only depend on the selected superhard abrasives, but also on the properties of the binders. As one of the essential elements of grinding tools, the binder determines the hardness, toughness and self-sharpening property of the grinding tools.
②. Both diamond and CBN are brittle materials. Due to the reasons in production and processing, there are certain crystalline defects, inclusions, etc. on the surface and inside of the abrasive grains. These defects are more common in low-grade abrasives, resulting in a relatively low impact strength. They are extremely prone to breakage during the grinding process and thus lose their grinding function. If they are encapsulated with relatively tough metals or the like to make up for the surface defects, the impact resistance of the abrasive grains will be improved to a certain extent, and the service life of the grinding tool will be prolonged. This is particularly important for resin-bonded grinding tools.
③. A considerable number of binder materials have corrosive and destructive effects on diamond and CBN. For example, ferrous metals such as Fe and Ni promote the transformation of diamond into graphite structure at high temperatures and have an etching effect on its surface, causing the size of diamond to decrease and its strength to decline.
It can be seen from the above that whether it is to improve the utilization rate of superhard abrasives, protect the abrasive grains from being corroded and damaged by harmful substances, or increase the strength of the abrasive grains themselves, it is necessary to improve the physicochemical characteristics of the surface of the abrasive grains and enhance the bonding ability between the abrasive grains and the binder.
Generally, it refers to the method of using surface treatment techniques to plate, deposit, or coat other materials on the surface of superhard materials, causing changes in the state, shape, or physicochemical aspects of the surface of the abrasive grains. This is usually called the surface coating of superhard abrasives. The thickness of the coating layer can range from tens of nanometers to the millimeter level, and the coating materials can be metals, ceramics, or organic substances. Meanwhile, the surface layer of the superhard abrasive grains being coated acquires the general properties of the coating materials.
